If you or someone you love has suffered a paralysis-causing injury in a Southern California accident, call today for a no-cost evaluation of your case.

What Causes Paralysis?

Paralysis refers to the inability to move a part of the body, either temporarily or permanently. Paralysis is typically caused by nerve damage, often to the spinal cord, rather than damage to a specific body party. At Ochoa & Calderón, we help accident victims recover compensation for any form of paralysis.

Damage to the spinal cord interrupts the brain’s signals to the rest of the body, preventing the injured person from controlling those parts of the body. Like a kink in a garden hose, the signal stops at the location of the injury, and any body part on the other side of the injury loses functionality. Injuries to the base of the skull and other higher-up parts of the spinal cord can be more severe because more of the body is affected; an injury to the lower spine, for example, might only affect the legs.

The Levels and Severity of Paralysis

Although any amount of paralysis is debilitating and upsetting and certainly merits compensation, not all paralysis is the same. Medical professionals categorize different types of paralysis based on the extent of the functional limitations and the area of the body that is affected.

The four main categories of paralysis are as follows:

  • Monoplegia is the paralysis of a single part of the body, often a single limb. Monoplegia is often caused by nerve impingement, brain injuries, strokes, or developmental disorders such as cerebral palsy.
  • Hemiplegia refers to paralysis affecting one side of the body, such as the left arm and left leg. Hemiplegia is usually caused by cerebral palsy, but it can also result from incomplete damage to the spinal cord, brain injuries, nerve damage, and damage to the nervous system.
  • Paraplegia affects the areas below the waist, typically impairing the legs, hips, and bodily functions. Paraplegia can be caused by any number of accidents or illnesses affecting the spine or the brain, including a spinal cord infection, severance of the spinal cord, brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, brain infection, oxygen deprivation leading to brain damage, stroke, or nerve damage.
  • Quadriplegia or tetraplegia refers to paralysis below the neck. All four limbs are affected as well as any number of bodily organs and functions. The degree of functional loss varies by person, depending on the nature and extent of the injury. Severe damage to the spinal cord leading to quadriplegia typically occurs in a traumatic accident such as a car crash, a fall, an industrial accident, or other violent incident.

Whatever the nature of your paralysis, Ochoa & Calderón is ready to help. If you were paralyzed through someone else’s negligence or reckless actions, you have the right to justice and compensation. We’ll fight until you get what you are owed.
